The enforcement directorate's probe into alleged money laundering by the scam-scarred Saradha group may cover important politicians and their kin, besides media professionals, exposing them to the risk of confiscation of their bank accounts and properties.

Sources in the ED, which has already registered a case in Guwahati, said the agency will issue summons to all those who helped siphon off money that Saradha had mopped up from unsuspecting small investors, besides main accused Sudipta Sen and his accomplices. This will lead the investigators to all those who dealt with the arrested CMD of Saradha group: a category which includes politicians of diverse affiliations as well as journalists.

In a letter to the CBI, Sen has alleged that some politicians and their kin had blackmailed him into investing huge amounts in a clutch of publications and TV channels.

There were allegations of Rs 42 crore investment in a Guwahati-based channel at the instance of some influential people, which Sen claimed was done after he was "blackmailed" and in lieu of bailing him out of legal cases against the group.

Manoranjana Sinh, who has been accused by Sen of coercing him to invest in her TV venture, told TOI on Friday that it was the Saradha chief who had approached her through a Kolkata-based businessman, Ramesh Gandhi, offering to be a partner in a media venture.

"I had some offers from leading media houses but I agreed to do this project with Sudipta Sen after he showed keenness and agreed to bear the entire cost of Rs 25 crore for the project," she said. An agreement was signed with Sen for starting two TV channels - one in the north-east and one in Delhi. The total cost of the two projects was Rs 42.5 crore payable as per the terms of the contract, Sinh said.

Defending Nalini Chidambaram, wife of finance minister P Chidambaram, Sinh said her name was being dragged in by Sen to protect his own skin. "Nalini was my counsel in a case I have been fighting against my husband (Matang Sinh) in a matter before the Company Law Board for the last five years. Nalini has been my standing counsel in that matter," Manoranjana said and added that since Nalini was her counsel, she drew up this agreement between her and Sudipta Sen for the TV project in Guwahati and Delhi.

"When I came to know about the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) notices that Sen had received, I approached Nalini and she carried out due diligence on the Saradha group's activities," she said while explaining how Nalini had given a written legal opinion to Sen advising him to "go to SEBI and get a consent order before any further investment in the TV channel is made and must close down all collective investment schemes which are illegal as per the Indian laws".

"Sen had not accepted Nalini's advice and told us that we should not interfere in his business and that he knows how to manage his affairs," Manoranjana said. She told TOI that Sen had only paid Rs 20 crore for the TV project and the venture was cash-strapped as 150 people were already hired for the channel.
