The Orissa government on Friday came down heavily on anti- Posco protesters by arresting 18 villagers, including a prominent anti-Posco leader, and carried on with its land acquisition drive for the South Korean steel major's 12 million tonnes steel plant near Paradip.

The government officials also seized a betel vine belonging to Basudev Behera, one of the leaders of the Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS).

The police detained Behera in Kujang police station, after a group of people protested the authority's move to demolish the betel vine and tried to prevent officials. Behera refused to accept compensation for his betel vine.

The police also arrested 17 other people, including 10 from Behera's family, for opposing land acquisition for the steel plant, according to rehabilitation and resettlement officer Surjit Das.

The authorities had served a notice to Behera about a fortnight ago, to vacate the government land on which he had grown a betel vine.

PPSS activists have stepped up their opposition to the land acquisition process and have put in place round-the-clock guards at villages like Dhinkia and Gobindpur, considered the epicentre of the anti-Posco activity.

As the administration was gearing to enter Gobindpur village after acquiring land in Gada Kujang panchayat, PPSS activated its protests. "We will oppose the authorities if they touch Dhinkia area," said PPSS president Abhay Sahu. The arrests have cast a shadow on the fate of the project that has been pending since 2005. The company had signed memorandum of understanding with the state government in June 2005, to set up a mega steel project with an investment of Rs 52,000 crore. However, the company could not progress because of opposition from local people.

Meanwhile, Communist Party of India general secretary A B Bardhan on Friday asked the Naveen Patnaik government to refrain from forcible eviction of local people from their ancestral lands in the proposed Posco steel plant site and threatened a mass agitation if the latter did not stop the ongoing land acquisition.

"The chief minister promised us there will be no use of force for acquiring land for industrial projects. But today they arrested 17 persons, including five children and four women. The CPI will oppose this kind of state aggression," Bardhan said in his inaugural speech at a five-day state executive committee meeting at Bhagawati Bhawan here.

The veteran leader said Naveen had "bulldozed" the trust the people of Orissa by using police force against people who opposed to part with their land for industries.

The CPI has convened a meeting of like-minded parties such as CPI (M), Forward Block, Rashtriya Janata Dal and Samajwadi Party on Saturday to discuss the Posco issue.
