Patiala: Pest attack has been reported in some areas of Patiala and Sangrur districts on paddy crop that is about to be harvested. Patiala chief agriculture officer Parminder Singh said 'kala tela' (black hopper) had attacked paddy here forcing farmers to reap the crop pre-maturely.

He said that the farmers were taking the premature crop after harvest to mandis but it was not being procured due to high moisture content. "With paddy lying unsold, it has led to glut in the mandis," he added. Parminder said black hopper attacked the stem of paddy plants. High humidity in weather was the reason of black hopper outbreak, he said. "A little rain was the need of the hour to help clear the pest," said the CAO. He said the recommended pesticide spray did not fully reach the lower part of the plant making the effort go waste. Parminder advised the farmers not to reap the paddy prematurely as that would affect its quality.

General secretary of the Patiala unit of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Rajewal) Gurcharan Singh said due to the spread of the pest, farmers were being forced to go for early reaping of paddy which had higher moisture content than permissible 17%.
