Indore: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially kick off Digital India Week at 4 PM on Wednesday over video conferencing in two village panchayats in Indore. Industry leaders like Cyrus Mistry, Mukesh Ambani, Azim Premji, Pawan Munjal, Sunil Mittal, Kumar Manglam Birla and Anil Ambani are expected to be present at the launch.

The Digital India Project aims to connect all gram panchayats in India through broadband, promote e-governance and transform India into a connected economy. As a part of the launch, 10 village panchayats in Indore will be connected to high-speed internet service from BSNL today, while work to connect 335 others is almost complete, according to a BSNL official.

The project is also expected to attract over a billion dollars in Foreign Direct Investment and generate thousands of jobs, according to telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

According to PTI reports, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has also asked universities and higher education institutes across the country to observe the Digital India week from today. In addition, over 600 districts across the country will organise programmes to raise awareness about digital communication and technology among people.
