The Orissa government would wait for the views of its department secretaries in the next two weeks before taking a call on the renewal of the MoU with Posco.

A high-level meeting of chaired by Chief Secretary B K Patnaik on Tuesday deferred a decision on recommending the revised Posco MoU to the Chief Minister as several department secretaries indicated that they needed time to study the new points. The government would also consult the top management of the South Korean steel major before the revised MoU is sent to the CM for his approval.

The MoU with Posco for setting up a 12 million tonne greenfield steel complex in Jagatsinghpur district expired on June 22 last year without the company making any significant advancements due to lack of environmental clearances as well public opposition to land acquisition plans. But the situation has turned around for the company after the project got the final clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests on May 1 and subsequently, the state government started acquiring land.

“The secretaries would give their views in next two weeks. At the next meeting, it will be decided whether we want to include some new points in the MoU,” Patnaik said after the meeting.

Keeping in view the suggestions of Jairam Ramesh not to allow export of iron ore for the project, the state government is likely to put in conditions of no export of iron ore. The revised MoU would also contain the revised project plan proposed by Posco and also the mandatory employment clause of the Orissa government.
