Rains in the last few days across the country excluding the southern peninsula have affected the standing wheat crop. Harvesting has already been delayed by a fortnight in Punjab, the wheat bowl of the country. State governments are advising farmers not to bring the moisture-laden wheat to market yards for sale.

"At isolated places, there are instances of water-logging. It will not impact production with harvesting at its peak in major wheat-growing states. However, moisture level has increased and farmer will have to dry the grains before bringing them to the mandi," said Directorate of Wheat Research project director Indu Sharma, who is travelling in Gujarat to oversee wheat procurement.

According to government data, wheat procurement in the 2012-13 rabi marketing season has crossed 22 lakh tonne till April 12. Madhya Pradesh has procured 19,38,754 tonne wheat followed by Haryana with 1,68,147 tonne. Rajasthan has also procured 51,487 tonne while Gujarat procured 21,308 tonne by the date. Procurement in Punjab is expected to pick up from next week.

"Wheat procurement by various government agencies is expected to be delayed with scant arrivals in the mandis across the states," said Punjab Food and Civil Supplies secretary DS Grewal. The crop has been hit in major districts of Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib and Mohali in Punjab.

According to Indian Meteorology Department's weather outlook, rain or thundershowers would occur at one or two places over western Himalayan region and extreme south peninsular India. The weather would be mainly dry over the rest of the country.

Crop loss owing to heavy hailstorm has been reported from Bengal's Kharagpur block. Farmers who planted the late-variety wheat have been in trouble due to rains with harvesting and threshing still going on. The situation is no different in several parts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. "The wheat crop has been damaged and we are visiting the impacted districts," said an Uttar Pradesh agriculture department official.
