The Information Commission is planning to set up Division Benches in the State for quick disposal of cases under the Right to Information Act 2005, State Information Commissioner Shekar D. Sajjan Rao told presspersons here on Tuesday.

He said a proposal in this regard is already before the commission, and strategies are being chalked out for the systematic setting up of these benches. These Division Benches would function like that of the High Court Benches, he added.

Of the 30,000 cases of delay and refusal of providing information under the Act, the commission sorted out over 20,000 cases and the remaining ones would be cleared in the next few months. “For quick disposal of the remaining cases, seven information commissioners are touring the districts to know the status of these cases, and reasons for delay in solving them”, Mr. Shekar D. Sajjan Rao added.

So far, the commission has imposed fine on 600 officials in the State and collected from them fine totalling Rs. 30 lakh. In reply to a query, he said the Act was enacted to bring transparency in administration and so far it has not made significant progress in this direction owing to lack of awareness about the RTI Act among the general public. “The district administration, non-government organisations and educational institutions should conduct awareness programmes on the RTI Act”, he added.

In-charge Deputy Commissioner S.A. Jiddimani and Assistant Commissioner Suresh Jirle were among those present.
