Services sector contributes Rs 2.98 lakh crore to Delhi's GDP

NEW DELHI: The services sector contributed a whopping Rs 2.98 lakh crore to Delhi's gross domestic product (GDP) of Rs 3.65 lakh crore in 2012-13, keeping its position as the main driver of the city's economy.

The services sector, which includes real estate, hotels, restaurants, banking, insurance, wholesale and retail trade, accounted for 81.54 per cent of Delhi's total GDP in 2012-13 compared to an 81.62 per cent contribution in 2011-12, as per a report released today on Delhi's economy by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

At current prices, the services sector contributed Rs 2.98 lakh crore to Delhi's GDP in 2012-13 against Rs 2.53 lakh crore in the previous fiscal, the report 'Estimates of State Domestic Product - 2012-13' said.

"We are promoting non-polluting industries and that is why Delhi is developing as a major centre for service sector, including IT, to leave behind neighbouring cities like NOIDA and Gurgaon," the Chief Minister said.

The share of secondary sector to the GDP was 17.69 per cent while the primary sector's contribution has been estimated at 0.77 per cent in 2012-13. The primary sector comprises of agriculture and allied services, while secondary sector consists of construction and manufacturing sectors.

As per the estimates, the secondary sector contributed Rs 64,718 crore at current prices to the GDP in 2012-13 against Rs 54,321 crore in the previous fiscal.

The share of the primary sector in the 2012-13 was Rs 2,813 crore against Rs 2,774 crore in 2011-12.

In the service sector, the share of hotels and restaurants was 18.24 per cent while the maximum contribution of 40.23 per cent to the GDP came from financial services, insurance and real estate business.

As per the report, the per capita annual income in city has increased by 15.77 per cent to Rs 2.01 lakh in 2012-13 compared to the previous fiscal, which is three times the national average.

The per capita income of people in Delhi at current prices without factoring in inflation has been estimated at Rs 2,01,083 which is a rise of Rs 27,397 from Rs 1,73,686 in 2011-12, according to Economic Survey tabled today in Delhi Assembly. The national average has been worked out at Rs 61,564.

Almost all the findings of the 'Estimates of State Domestic Product - 2012-13' had figured in the Economic Survey which the Government had released in March.
