GUMLA: Now water will reach the fields of Gumla villages without electricity, diesel or kerosene in the district.

This will be possible with application of siphon and gravity based irrigation project. The minor irrigation division in Gumla is all set to launch its first such project on old reservoir at Bendora village under Chainpur block of the district soon.

Later, other big reservoirs like Narma in Bishunpur block and others in the district will also undergo the same. The first project will irrigate 200 acres of plot, according to minor irrigation division, Gumla.

Gumla has many reservoirs built years ago but water is not reaching the fields and they are lying as useless irrigation projects though constructed at huge costs. Now, these water bodies will have irrigation potentiality with the introduction of new irrigation technique based on the simple principle of siphon and gravity.

"We will start it from Bendora reservoir first within this week," said executive engineer with minor irrigation department Gagandeo Baitha.

After the successful execution of the first project at a very low cost, it will usher in a new phase of irrigation schemes in the days to come, he hoped. The idea to launch this technique of ensuring irrigation facility came after a team of officials comprising executive engineer, DPO JJB Tirkey, Subir Kumar Das and Sushil Kumar Das and Arun Kumar Singh recently visited Pakur district following the directive of DC Rahul Sharma.

The team inspected Mayurkola siphon project, Ramnathpur, Poderkola and Tikutola gravity irrigation project in Pakur district.

Interestingly, these projects were initiated there with dedication shown by an engineer Jitendra Kumar and these projects are working successfully. Siphon works on three types of energy potential or elevation energy, pressure energy and kinetic energy, according to Kumar.
