BAREILLY: Even as data is being compiled on malnutrition and severe acute malnutrition cases in the district, deaths due to malnourishment are not being taken into account by the district authorities.

Three children found to be suffering from severe acute malnutrition (SAM) died within a few months of their birth in Bithri Chainpur block in the time period between two surveys, but there is no mention of this in the report. A survey on malnutrition was conducted in November last year, while another one was conducted in February, which found a rise in number of SAM cases by 300, bringing the total to 6,000. The district also has 80,000 cases of malnutrition.

When contacted, district officials said no deaths had occurred due to SAM. District project officer (DPO) Rajesh Kumar said, "I have no information regarding deaths due to malnutrition cases. The survey is on and compiling of data is going on at present."

However, according to reports prepared by anganwadi workers, Padarthpur, Parsona and Manpuriya Dalel villages under Bithri block recorded deaths of infants and children due to malnutrition between two surveys conducted by the DPO.

Parsona village, which has a population of around 10,000 villagers, has five anganwadi centers. One of the centres recorded two cases of SAM and 49 cases of malnutrition, out of which 26 are boys while remaining 23 are girls.

Talking to TOI, Wasim, an anganwadi worker, said, "There were three SAM cases in November but one child died merely 15 days after its birth." Giving details, he said, a baby was born on October 19, 2014, but as he was suffering from malnutrition, he succumbed to infection, which would not have been the case had it been a healthy baby. "The family doesn't have a ration card and had shifted to the city recently for better earning opportunities," he added.

Padarathpur village, situated on National Highway 24, has a population of 15,000 with six anganwadi centers. An anganwadi worker, Tasneem Aara, said, "There were two SAM cases in February. One child died of malnutrition around two months back."

Village pradhan Hasmat Yar Khan said the family belonged to BPL category and was struggling to make ends meet. He added that Rs 10,000 was received annually for conducting sanitation, health and other necessary works in the village and the account is jointly shared with Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery (ANM).

Death of another SAM case was reported from Manpuriya Dalel village under Bithri Chainpur village where anganwadi worker Meena Kumari said a baby girl had died merely 20 days after birth in November.

Talking to TOI, AD, Health, Dr Subodh Sharma said, "There is no death due to malnutrition in the district, but there are cases where children died due to complications of malnutrition. Around 46-48% people are suffering from static malnutrition and the only way to fight the curse is to make people aware about it."

The DPO added that compilation of data was over in Bithri Chainpur, Kyara and Bhojipura blocks of the district.
