The people adversely affected by the Tarapur Atomic Power Station today said they would revive their agitation against the project and meet villagers protesting a nuclear plant at Jaitapur to create awareness about the dark side of the project.

The announcement came days before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s scheduled visit to Tarapur to inaugurate a nuclear reprocessing facility.

“The government has offered a higher compensation package to the local residents affected by the Jaitapur project recently without even checking whether rehabilitation of India’s first nuclear power project has been complete. Nearly 40 years after the government first acquired land for the Tarapur units 1 and 2, affected people have not been rehabilitated fully,” Vijay V. Tamore, president of Thane Jilha Pradushan Mukt Sthanik Lokadhikar Sanstha, said this evening.

A group of organisations representing the people from Tarapur plan to hold demonstrations outside the plant on January 7 when Singh visits it to inaugurate the second power reactor fuel reprocessing plant.

“We plan to revive our agitation and will definitely travel to Jaitapur. Because, as in Jaitapur, the government had deployed a police force and implemented the project despite the strong opposition from local villagers and fishermen in Tarapur,” Tamore said.
