Team Anna will start its campaign in the five poll-bound states from Saturday, almost two weeks ahead of the earlier plan it had announced.

The group said it would not ask voters to back or oppose any particular party but make them aware of every party’s stand on the Lokpal bill.

Team Anna had earlier said it would start its campaign from February 3 in Uttar Pradesh. Its tour plan now suggests its campaign will focus on Uttarakhand in January.

BJP-ruled Uttarakhand had passed a Lokayukta bill in November, which Team Anna had then hailed as “cent per cent” identical with its “Jan Lokpal bill”. Congress sources had said last weekend that the civil society group had got in touch with Uttarakhand chief minister B.C. Khanduri and promised to mobilise support for his party.

Team Anna’s itinerary suggests it will devote five days between January 21 and January 28 to Uttarakhand, campaigning in Punjab only two days. The two states vote on January 30, with canvassing ending in both at 4pm on January 28.

“During these tours, the response of the various parties to the movement and their stand on the Lokpal bill would be told to the people,” a Team Anna statement said.

“People would be encouraged to ask all parties whether they would bring a strong Lokayukta bill. The movement would not ask people to vote in favour (of), or against, any particular party. It would be left to their wisdom.”

The statement added that Team Anna would be in Uttarakhand from January 21 to 23, campaign in Punjab on January 24 and 25, and return to Uttarakhand to campaign on January 27 and January 28.

“The month of February has been primarily dedicated to (the) Uttar Pradesh elections, which Team Anna would visit from February 2 till February 25,” it said. The group said it would be in Goa from February 28 to March 1.

It’s unclear whether or when Anna Hazare, recuperating from illness in Ralegan Siddhi in Maharashtra, will join other members of his team in campaigning.

Yesterday, Hazare met people in Ralegan for the first time since being discharged from hospital on January 7. The 74-year-old said he would return to public life within 10 days. His associates had earlier said he might not be able to take part in his team’s campaign in the poll-bound states because of poor health.

In a signed statement this evening, Hazare criticised some Ramdev followers’ attempt to deface a hoarding featuring Sonia Gandhi outside the Congress headquarters in Delhi. He said the act went against the spirit of democracy.
