Over a dozen students of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences today boycotted their annual convocation while others handed badges that read “No to Nuclear Energy” to chief guest Jairam Ramesh in protest against the Jaitapur power project.

A group of 22 students, who had visited the seven villages in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district that will be affected by the 9,900MW nuclear plant, also presented the environment minister with a fact file from the region.

“This is to show solidarity with the people who will be affected by the project. The government seems to think that everything can be compensated, even the lives lost in such protests,” said Subroto Dey, 30, who was among the 15 who boycotted the convocation.

Last month, a protester was killed in alleged police firing.

In April last year, a social impact study by TISS had said the project would have a “huge negative impact on social and environmental development” in the coastal region.

Ramesh today asked the students to be free from prejudice. “I find, unfortunately, a bias against economic growth and technology in the social concerns but please do not become vociferous techno-phobes or growth sceptics,” he said.

“Our energy needs in the future will increase such that we need all sources of electricity generation. We will have to generate eight to 11 million jobs a year in the next 10 years. For that kind of economic growth, there is no alternative to coal, hydro and nuclear power,” he said, adding that the government would introduce a bill on setting up an independent nuclear regulatory authority in Parliament’s monsoon session.

Ramesh later spoke to the students, who saw the discussion as a “beginning” and thought he gave “satisfactory” answers but said they would continue their protest.
