NEW DELHI: A cross-section of political leaders, activists and academics came together on Wednesday at JantarMantar against what they call NarendraModi government's attempt to dilute Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme.

Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar, the first CM to lead a dharna against the dilution of MGNREGS, said his state is facing a massive cut in funds from the Centre. He said it has come down to Rs 650 crore from last year's Rs 1400 crore. Sarkar said right from the beginning, vested interests in rural areas, big landlords, money lenders, big capitalists and corporate houses were opposed to the programme. He attacked the UPA-II government which had started curtailing MGNREGA. He accused the Modi government of failing to deliver on its promises. "The decision to curtail MNREGS will adversely affect Tripura which is the best performing state in this regard. This will not be tolerated," he said.

Inaugurating the dharna, CPM general secretary Prakash Karat said his party will take the protest to each village. In West Bengal, 38,000 villages are observing a bandh and in all of Kerala too demonstrations are being held at the panchayat level. "Modi government is acting at the behest of corporates and the vested interests in the rural areas who are now compelled to pay higher wages since the implementation of the scheme," he said.

Senior CPM leader Sitaram Yechury said fight against dilution of MGNREGS will not end with one-day protest but will continue inside and outside Parliament. He said assurance given by rural affairs minister Venkaiah Naidu does not mean anything as their main demand for increase in allocation is not being looked into. Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar said MGNREGA is facing threats from the big landowners and industrialists. JD (U) president Sharad Yadav said Sarkar is among the best chief ministers in the country and he came to the protest function to laud his efforts in saving MGNREGA from dilution.
