One more biodiversity project at Sindhudurg in Malvan, Maharastra

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has sanctioned a community-based natural resource management and mangrove conservation project in Godavari estuary, Andhra Pradesh, similar to the Gulf of Mannar Marine Conservation Project in Tamil Nadu.

Speaking to The Hindu, Doley Tshering, Regional Technical Specialist, Ecosystems and Natural Resources, Regional Centre in Bangkok for Asia and the Pacific countries, who visited here recently, said that the project was part of a $24 million project that included a Global Environment Facility (GEF) grant of $6 million.

The project would focus on mainstreaming coastal and marine biodiversity into several production sectors such as fishing, ports and shipping, aquaculture, agriculture, salt pans, and tourism.

He said it was conceived based on the marine conservancy and sustainable livelihood programme being implemented in Gulf of Mannar with the participation of Tamil Nadu Government, GEF,UNDP and others.

A high-level forest official team of Andhra Pradesh visited Gulf of Mannar recently and met S. Balaji, Director, Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve Trust, to take stock of the project intricacies.

In 44 villages

The Godhavari project would be implemented in 44 villages situated in East Godavari River Estuarine Ecosystem and thus supporting biodiversity conservation in the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary, an IUCN category IV protected area with high biodiversity value.

The sanctuary was the second largest mangrove area in the country with a high diversity of mangrove species, including endangered flora and fauna. Mr. Tshering said the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, Environment and Forests Department of Andhra Pradesh, and Pollution Control Board would implement the project.

The East Godavari region was known for a wide range of faunal species such as amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, that depended on coastal ecosystems. Animals such as otter, fishing cat, jackal, and sea turtle were found in creeks.

Stakeholders

He added that the GEF-supported project aimed to restore and preserve the coastal and marine ecosystems of Andhra Pradesh.

Government, non-governmental agencies, fishermen, and others would be the stakeholders of the project, to carry out awareness programmes, capacity development programmes, to enhance monitoring and enforcement functions, and to establish community institutions.

Lianchawii, Programme Officer, Energy and Environment Unit, UNDP, New Delhi, said that one more coastal marine biodiversity conservation project would be implemented at Sindhudurg in Malvan, Maharastra, for which sanction would be accorded within three to four weeks.
