BHOPAL: Poverty, unemployment and water scarcity has forced the migration of nearly a lakh Saharia tribals from more than 20 villages of Sheopur district over the past two months.

While the region is no stranger to drought like situation in the early months of summer, delay of MGNREGA funds from central government has also affected many families. An estimated Rs 3 crore is due in payments to labourers.

Mass migration has taken place from Kariyadeh, Unchikhiri, Erahron, Patalghar, Jahangarh, Nehroni, Makauni and Panwada among other villages in Karhal tehsil that has not been declared drought-affected.

Migration has also taken place from Vijaypur, Sheopur and Badoda, said Pramod Tewari of Manav Foundation working among the tribals. "There is no MGNREGA work going on in the district to generate employment," he said.

District collector Pannalal Solanki admitted, "We have not received funds for labourers under MGNREGA for the past two months. They are outs for job. But, it is a fact that this year, more people are migrating."

The tribals not only go to Jaipur in neighbouring Rajasthan but also to Delhi and even down south to Kerala and Bengaluru.

They work at construction sites in big cities, as farm labourers and are involved in cutting crops in various districts of Uttar Pradesh. Youth prefer to go down south and Ahmedabad but tribals who migrate with families prefer to move to districts in Uttar Pradesh, Gwalior and Delhi.

Karhal's Congress MLA Ram Niwas Rawat said, "A payment of Rs 3 crore to tribals is due. Panchayat and rural development minister Gopal Bhargava told me this in the House earlier this month."

He said tribals do not have access to forest and they also do not have land or other resources to cultivate. The only job they can do is labour-intensive work but that too has stopped in this part of the state.
