Hyderabad: Religious dogmas and untouchability find way even into the food served to schoolchildren as part of the mid-day meal scheme, as reported by a study in Telangana.

While a few news reports have already appeared about parents objecting to meals cooked by Scheduled Caste women, the study led by the Caring Citizens’ Collective (CCC) vouches that many more similar cases are hushed up by teachers. The CCC is an NGO working on rural development issue.

“We found untouchability practised in preparation of mid-day meals at a few schools in Nalgonda, Medak and Khammam. People do not have objection if Scheduled Tribe cooks are employed but refuse to eat from SC women’s hands,” S. Asha Latha, who coordinated the study said.

More often than not, SC women in question buy peace by not protesting, while teachers try to hush up the issue by changing cooks.

A few village panchayats like Mudigonda in Nalgonda district resolved the issue by administering an oath against untouchability, while in Lakshmidevipally of Medak, the SC cooks themselves raised the issue before village panchayat. Citing another instance of religious taboos, K. Sajaya from CCC said the meals served by Akshaya Patra Foundation in Medak district kept eggs off the menu owing to religious beliefs professed by the organisation. Instead, students were being given bananas and other snacks. Only after protests and the district Collector’s intervention did the organisation bring the egg back, she noted, speaking after release of the report at an event here on Friday. The study evaluated ICDS and mid-day meal schemes in 10 districts of Telangana.
