                            <div align="justify">-The Business Standard<br /><br /><em>Nobel laureate says rural areas worst affected, with wages in Chinese villages having risen 6-7 times faster<br /></em><br />Nobel laureate Amartya Sen today said that wages in India had failed to keep pace with the overall GNP growth over the last decades.<br /><br />Sen pointed out, although India has seen a lot of economic growth over the past 20 years, wages, especially that of rural labour, have fallen behind. Comparing wage rise in India with that of China, Sen said, &quot;Rural wages in China in the last 20 years have risen about 6&ndash;7 times faster than rural wages in India.&quot;<br /><br />&quot;There needs to be some justice in the distribution of income,&quot; he said. Sen was delivering his speech on &quot;trade unions and economic growth&quot; during an event here to mark 90 years of Reserve Bank Employees Association.<br /><br />According to the Nobel laureate, unions that are ideally concerned with &quot;removal of injustice&quot; have a role to play to bring a change in this regard. &quot;Injustice needs to be removed in cooperation with unions,&quot; he noted.<br /><br />However, Sen pointed out, in India there is a very &quot;polarised&quot; perception about unions where people think either &quot;unions can do wrong&quot; or &quot;unions can do no right.&quot;<br /><br />Earlier RBI Deputy Governor K C Chakrabarty also spoke on the need of strong union movement in the banking sector. &quot;I want strong trade union movement in the banking sector. Because when the union movements become strong management also becomes strong.Only strong management can only work towards removal of poverty,&quot; he noted.</div>

                            <div align="justify">-The Business Standard<br /><br /><em>Nobel laureate says rural areas worst affected, with wages in Chinese villages having risen 6-7 times faster<br /></em><br />Nobel laureate Amartya Sen today said that wages in India had failed to keep pace with the overall GNP growth over the last decades.<br /><br />Sen pointed out, although India has seen a lot of economic growth over the past 20 years, wages, especially that of rural labour, have fallen behind. Comparing wage rise in India with that of China, Sen said, &quot;Rural wages in China in the last 20 years have risen about 6&ndash;7 times faster than rural wages in India.&quot;<br /><br />&quot;There needs to be some justice in the distribution of income,&quot; he said. Sen was delivering his speech on &quot;trade unions and economic growth&quot; during an event here to mark 90 years of Reserve Bank Employees Association.<br /><br />According to the Nobel laureate, unions that are ideally concerned with &quot;removal of injustice&quot; have a role to play to bring a change in this regard. &quot;Injustice needs to be removed in cooperation with unions,&quot; he noted.<br /><br />However, Sen pointed out, in India there is a very &quot;polarised&quot; perception about unions where people think either &quot;unions can do wrong&quot; or &quot;unions can do no right.&quot;<br /><br />Earlier RBI Deputy Governor K C Chakrabarty also spoke on the need of strong union movement in the banking sector. &quot;I want strong trade union movement in the banking sector. Because when the union movements become strong management also becomes strong.Only strong management can only work towards removal of poverty,&quot; he noted.</div>

                            <div align="justify">-The Business Standard<br /><br /><em>Nobel laureate says rural areas worst affected, with wages in Chinese villages having risen 6-7 times faster<br /></em><br />Nobel laureate Amartya Sen today said that wages in India had failed to keep pace with the overall GNP growth over the last decades.<br /><br />Sen pointed out, although India has seen a lot of economic growth over the past 20 years, wages, especially that of rural labour, have fallen behind. Comparing wage rise in India with that of China, Sen said, &quot;Rural wages in China in the last 20 years have risen about 6&ndash;7 times faster than rural wages in India.&quot;<br /><br />&quot;There needs to be some justice in the distribution of income,&quot; he said. Sen was delivering his speech on &quot;trade unions and economic growth&quot; during an event here to mark 90 years of Reserve Bank Employees Association.<br /><br />According to the Nobel laureate, unions that are ideally concerned with &quot;removal of injustice&quot; have a role to play to bring a change in this regard. &quot;Injustice needs to be removed in cooperation with unions,&quot; he noted.<br /><br />However, Sen pointed out, in India there is a very &quot;polarised&quot; perception about unions where people think either &quot;unions can do wrong&quot; or &quot;unions can do no right.&quot;<br /><br />Earlier RBI Deputy Governor K C Chakrabarty also spoke on the need of strong union movement in the banking sector. &quot;I want strong trade union movement in the banking sector. Because when the union movements become strong management also becomes strong.Only strong management can only work towards removal of poverty,&quot; he noted.</div>

Wages in India lagged behind overall GNP growth: Amartya Sen

-The Business Standard Nobel laureate says rural areas worst affected, with wages in Chinese villages having risen 6-7 times faster Nobel laureate Amartya Sen today said that wages in India had failed to keep pace with the overall GNP growth over the last decades. Sen pointed out, although India has seen a lot of economic growth over the past 20 years, wages, especially that of rural labour, have fallen behind. Comparing wage rise in India with that of China, Sen said, "Rural wages in China in the last 20 years have risen about 6–7 times faster than rural wages in India." "There needs to be some justice in the distribution of income," he said. Sen was delivering his speech on "trade unions and economic growth" during an event here to mark 90 years of Reserve Bank Employees Association. According to the Nobel laureate, unions that are ideally concerned with "removal of injustice" have a role to play to bring a change in this regard. "Injustice needs to be removed in cooperation with unions," he noted. However, Sen pointed out, in India there is a very "polarised" perception about unions where people think either "unions can do wrong" or "unions can do no right." Earlier RBI Deputy Governor K C Chakrabarty also spoke on the need of strong union movement in the banking sector. "I want strong trade union movement in the banking sector. Because when the union movements become strong management also becomes strong.Only strong management can only work towards removal of poverty," he noted.
