Two hundred families from 40 ‘Black Spot' villages, that were notorious for brewing hooch and selling in Dharmapuri District have been rehabilitated by the Prohibition and Enforcement Wing (PEW), thanks to the efforts of Additional Superintendent of Police P. Saravanan.

R. Sudhakar, District Superintendent of Police told The Hindu that the district police identified these villages and conducted social awareness campaigns at regular intervals.

As part of this initiative, the PEW wing conducted eye camps in association with the Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital, Lions Clubs and Rotary Clubs and the NGOs in the district.

Eye-screening tests were conducted on 2500 persons and 38 patients were operated upon for cataract at Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital in Chennai. They were taken to Chennai in a police bus.

Mr. Saravanan said that in order to rehabilitate the 200 families, the district police had sought and obtained Rs. 30 lakh from the government and disbursed it to the families for buying cattle (partial amount was arranged as loan) in three phases.

In October, 67 families were given Rs. 11 lakh as relief, Rs. 10 lakh was distributed to 71 others while the remaining 62, were given Rs. 9 lakhs for taking up alternative employment.

Most families preferred to purchase milch cows and goats for their livelihood. Only a handful sought to start petty shops.

The rehabilitated families would be continuously monitored by the Village Administrative Officers, who would also vouch for their good conduct. The police would also ensure that welfare schemes reached these families.

Mr. Saravanan said recently about 110 hooch traders in Sornampatti village, near Karimangalam, recently volunteered to mend their ways and a meeting was organised to rehabilitate them.

In recognition of Mr. Saravanan's efforts at eradicating hooch manufacture and trade in Dharmapuri villages, the State Government has conferred the Uthamar Gandhi Award on him.
