Coffee, rubber farmers migrate to dairy sector

ALAPPUZHA:
Milk production in the State has been registering a notable increase in recent months. The rise is partly due to the adoption of dairying by a considerable number of coffee and rubber farmers disgusted with the fall in prices of the produce.

The price fall in coffee has had a telling effect on the lives of coffee farmers in Wayanad who have turned to dairying in large numbers, Kallada Ramesh, chairman of Milma’s Thiruvananthapuram region, told The Hindu . “Dairying has become a buffer against stress arising out of price fall of coffee in Wayanad, a district which had gained notoriety for farmers’ suicide. The result is visible with the Malabar region recording surplus production,” he says.

A number of rubber farmers in Ernakulam and Kottayam have taken up dairying, resulting in an increase in milk production in both the districts. More people have been attracted to dairying as Milma has adopted a proactive approach to increase milk production in close coordination with government and non-government bodies, he says.

A new facilitation-cum-information centre for dairy farmers was opened at Karumadi in Ambalappuzha with government aid of Rs.5.25 lakh and funds from the local milk producers’ body on Friday. It was just one of the many welfare measures extended to dairy farmers. The Thiruvananthapuram division of Milma, representing milk cooperatives in Alappuzha,

Thiruvanathapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta districts, distributed Rs.4.5 crore profit gained last year to member-societies. Such initiatives have attracted new entrepreneurs to dairying.

Gradual migration

Tom C. Antony, Deputy Director, Dairy Development Department, affirms that there is a gradual migration from rubber cultivation to dairying in several areas. Apart from traditional milkshed areas of Vaikkom and Kaduthuruthy, new dairying regions have emerged. These include Kanjirappally, Earattupetta, Vazhoor and Uzhavoor, areas known for rubber plantations.

“Many farmers have launched small-scale dairy projects with 2-10 cows in these areas. About 350 dairy farms have sprung up recently in non-traditional areas. Milk production in Kottayam district has gone up from 60,000 litres per day in 2010-11 to 95,000 litres per day now. An assured price, demand-driven market and regular income are the key elements that bring entrepreneurs to dairying,” he says.
