VISAKHAPATNAM: DWCRA member makes strides by sellingfruit juice concentrates. Initially, she started off with just a couple of fruit juices using mango and guava pulp.

A couple of decades ago, G. Bhagya Lakshmi was striving hard to make both ends meet with her husband Raghavendra Rao’s meagre income. Today, she earns Rs.2-3 lakh a month by making homemade juice concentrates.

Hailing from Bandarulanka in East Godavari district, Bhagya Lakshmi attributes the success to her association with Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA) group that transformed her life drastically by giving her and lakhs of other women a new lease of life.

Initially, she started off with just a couple of fruit juices using mango and guava pulp.

“These refreshments do not have a shelf life. That’s when we started to do a little more research to increase the shelf life of the products. Finally, we came to know that the trick lies in preparing the sugar syrup to a required consistency,” explains the couple which came to the city to exhibit assorted fruit-flavoured sherbets at ‘SARAS-2015’ DWCRA Bazaar. These can be stored for about six months.

Recalling her experience, Bhagya Lakshmi says, “There were times when we could not feed our children at least two square meals a day. But, my prayers have been answered through the DWCRA self-help group, Vijaya Durga Mahila Shakti Sangham, which was launched with an initial investment of Rs.5,000.”

Apart from regular juice concentrates like orange, grape, and mango, her brand, Juicy Products, also contains flavours like ‘sugandhi’, strawberry, and rose-milk.

“Earlier, consumers were a little apprehensive to buy a DWCRA product. Eventually, with a reasonable price tag and quality products, we are able to tap the huge market potential not only in East and West Godavari districts but also in other places,” says Bhagya Lakshmi.

Through a network of dealers and regular buyers, some of her products also reach out to global clients.

Soon, she will be adding a new product to the catalogue.

“We will be introducing ‘Pootharekulu’ (traditional sweet) to our list in a couple of months. The idea is to expand our reach across States by tapping the online marketing channel and courier service,” she confirms.
