For the fifth year in a row, horticulture production is expected to surpass foodgrain production. However, as compared to the crop years 2014-15 and 2015-16, when drought was faced by most Indian states, horticulture production this year is predicted to rise by a meagre amount.

As compared to 2014-15 and 2015-16, horticulture production this year is expected to rise by 2.2 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively. However, as compared to 2013-14, which was a normal year in terms of monsoon rainfall, horticulture production in 2016-17 is likely to grow by 3.6 percent. Please see Table-1.

Between 2015-16 and 2016-17, foodgrain production is likely to grow by 8.1 percent but horticulture production is anticipated to increase by just 0.4 percent. Although the production of fruits is estimated to be about 2 percent higher than the previous year, the production of vegetables is expected to be marginally lower by 0.3 percent vis-à-vis last year.

The reader should note that for the country as a whole, rainfall during the southwest monsoon season (June-September) as a percentage of long period average (LPA) was 92 percent in 2012, 106 percent in 2013, 88 percent in 2014, 86 percent in 2015 and 97 percent in 2016, as per various reports from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to the first advance estimates of horticulture production in 2016-17, which has been released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare on 17 February, 2017:

* The horticulture production of the country during 2016-17 is estimated to be around 287.3 million tonnes, which is marginally higher as compared to 2015-16.

* The production of fruits is estimated to be 92 million tonnes, which is about 2 percent higher than the previous year.

* The production of vegetables is estimated to be around 168.6 million tonnes, which is marginally lower by 0.3 percent than the previous year.

* The production of spices is estimated to be around 7 million tonnes, which is almost same as previous year.

* The production of onion is estimated to be around 197 lakh tonnes which is 6 percent lower than the previous year, which was a bumper production year. However as compared to the past 5 year’s average onion production, this is about 5 percent higher.

* The production of potato is estimated to be around 439 lakh tonnes which is 1 percent higher than the previous year.

* The production of tomato is estimated to be around 189 lakh tonnes which is about 1 percent higher than the previous year.
