Eight journalists from Hindi and English media from six states have been selected for the 2013 Inclusive Media Fellowships of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS). In the best tradition of investigative and meaningful journalism, the fellows will spend time with rural communities to bring out their issues and anxieties for public and policy intervention. The fellowship Jury comprising Mr Krishna Prasad, Editor-in-Chief, Outlook, Mr Arvind Mohan, Former Senior/Executive Editor, Hindustan and Amar Ujala, Mr Girish Nikam, Senior Editor and Anchor, Rajya Sabha TV, Dr Suman Sahai, Convenor Gene Campaign, and Social Activist, and Mr Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, Senior Journalist, Author and TV Anchor, uninamyously selected the following eight fellows for the 2013 Fellowships after a long and meticulous selection process:

1.    Mr Pushya Mitra, Panchayatnama, Prabhat Khabar, Ranchi, Jharkhand (to work on issues of displacement and justice in the riverine villages of Khagaria district of Bihar)
2.    Ms Rashmi Kumari Sharma, Dainik Jagaran, Ranchi, Jharkhand (to work on the issues of agriculture, livelihoods and migration etc of tribal women of Jharkhand)
3.    Mr  Babulal Naga, Rajasthan Patrika, Jaipur, Rajasthan (to work on the state of hunger and malnutrition among children of Khairua and Saharia tribes in Baran district of Rajasthan)
4.    Mr. Shankar Singh Bhatia, Hindustan, Dehradun, Uttarakhand (to work on the crises of agricultural economy, livelihoods and migration in the middle Himalayan districts of Rudraprayag and Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand)
5.    Mr Vivian Fernandes, CNN-IBN, Delhi (to work on the bargaining powers of the farmers vis a vis MNCs and Food Corporations and a critical evaluation of Gujarat’s tribal development model)
6.    Mr Biswajit Banerjee, Pioneer, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (to work on the poor peoples’ struggle against encephalitis and rehabilitation of children in Eastern Uttar Pradesh)
7.    Ms Manisha Bhalla, Outlook, Hindi, Delhi (to work on issues of incest, rape, sex ratio and honour killings in Khap Panchayat dominated districts of Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh)
8.    Mr Praveen Malviya, Patrika, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh (to work on the issues of the right to cultivate lands perennially affected by floods in the face of questionable government policies in the riverine fields of Narmada in Madhya Pradesh.)

It was a difficult decision given that a large number of relevant and well thought-out proposals were received. The Jury had to go back and forth several times and consult individual proposals/ story ideas, recommendation letters, clippings/ samples, and all other details submitted by the applicants in order to break the many ties created by a large number of excellent applications. The final selection was made mainly on the basis of the relevance of the project, clarity and innovation of ideas, publications’ reach, initiative and drive, and writing/ analytical skills though the individual jury members also applied their own prerogatives and journalistic sense before coming up with their verdicts.  The jury felt that many more proposals could have made the grade but the availability of a limited number of fellowships resulted in a keen competition.

The Inclusive Media Fellowships are designed to encourage individual media persons to deeply interact with rural communities of this vast country to understand and write about their issues and, in the long-run, specialize on aspects of India’s rural crises. One of the main objectives of the Inclusive Media Project is to increase and sharpen the understanding about rural India’s multiple crises in the mainstream media. Three of the fellowships this year have been supported by the Gene campaign/ Centre for Policy Research, to highlight the issues of exclusion and hunger/ malnutrition or their eradication through innovation and positive intervention at the grassroots. The rules and regulations for the fellowships can be seen at im4change.org

The Inclusive Media for Change Project runs a clearing house of ideas, information and alternatives on India’s rural crises through its web-based resource centre im4change.org which features over 30 in-depth backgrounders and more than 20,000 web-links. The Inclusive Media for Change also conducts media research and media workshops on issues of positive interventions through panchayats and decentralized planning.
