On a day when villagers protesting against Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu were shot at and one of them killed, in Madhya Pradesh political compulsions finally brought victory of sorts on Monday, September 10, to villagers in Khandwa after a protest in neck-deep water for 17 days.<br />

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan agreed to reduce the water level at the Omkareshwar Dam to 189 metre. He has also agreed to form a five-member committee that will look at all their demands in the next three months. Chouhan has also agreed on the land for land demand as per the Grievance Redressal Authority (GRA) order to rehabilitate the displaced protestors.<br />
<br />
The displaced who had taken money from the government for the property and land acquired by it would now have to return 50 per cent of the compensation, the Special Rehabilitation Grant (SRG) and give a written application within 90 days for land.<br />
<br />
Reduction of water level in dam and land for land as compensation were key demands of protesters, who had been standing in neck-deep water since August 25 to agitate for proper rehabilitation and compensation. The Congress, the main opposition party in the state, had jumped into the fray and a team from the Central Government was scheduled to visit the site.<br />
<br />
The water level of the Omarkeshwar Dam, part of the Narmada Valley Project, built by the Narmada Hydrolectric Development Corporation, had been increased from 189 metres to 193 metres on 25th August. This would have submerged an estimated 30 villages and adversely affect the livelihood of about 52,000 people. The enhancement of water level was carried out without rehabilitating those who have lost their land to earlier submergence.<br />
<br />
A three-member committee has been set up to look into the demands of the dam oustees.<br />
<br />
A similar protest was on near the Indira Sagar dam too to demand that water level in that dam be brought down from 262 meters to 260 meters. There was no word from the CM on the Indira Sagar demand. Both dams are built across the Narmada river and are part of the Indira Sagar Project.<br />
<br />
In May 2011, the Apex Court ruled that the authorities are obliged to allot a land for land and a minimum of 2 hectares of land, well in advance of the completion of dam construction. After more than a year, the State had not allotted land to the over 2500 land-holder families. Even the Grievance Redressal Authority (GRA) has ruled in no uncertain terms that land must be given in lieu of land.<br />
<br />
Another organisation, Change.org, has started an <a href="http://www.change.org/en-IN/petitions/compensate-and-rehabilitate-people-affected-by-omkareshwar-indirasagar-dam?utm_source=action_alert&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=10428&alert_id=EWOhyZpVUi_AIVzMgLxOj">online petition</a> asking the CM to intervene and redress grievances of the people.<br />
