Women win awards for water conservation -Sumita Sarkar

NASHIK: Magsaysay Award winner Rajendra Singh felicitated women working in the field of water conservation in a programme titled, 'Neer Nadi Naari Sanman Sohala', organised jointly by Sanavivi Foundation and Swati Foundation a day ahead of International Women's Day.

Four women were felicitated, including a 13 year old, Srushti Nerkar, who has become a household name for her water saving shower project in the last few months, the standard VIII student has won 126 prizes for the project and a national award by Bharat Petroleum.

The other activists to be honoured were, Shyamala Chavan who was a government servant before she quit her job to dedicate her services to the drought-hit villages of Peth taluka. She is also trying to generate employment in these regions that have rains only for four months and no other source of employment after that.

Ami Chheda, whose family is into farming not only gave up the water of the stream by her farm that is legally hers but also constructed water pipelines for the village on the other side of the stream and let them use the water as well

The fourth award was given to Shivrai Pathak that has women dhol players, a activity that has been essentially male dominated until a few years ago.

"Lot of water-related work has been done in this state and 40% dams have been constructed here, yet today suicides are committed for water. This is because the political leaders did not care for nature," said Singh after the felicitation.
