A few recommendations by the Indian Council of Forestry and Research and Education (ICFRE) have upset the National Council for Protection of Natural Resources (NCPNR), which is fighting a legal battle against illegal mining in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

The ICFRE which carried out a macro-level Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) study of Bellary district following a direction from the Supreme Court had submitted its report to the court recently.

Recommendations such as commissioning of feasibility study to bring in an ‘environment friendly' superior underground mining technology to extract 8 billion tonnes of magnetite iron ore out of 10 billion tonnes of deposit in the country and cutting down production of ore by 40 per cent to “prevent environmental degradation” have upset the NCPNR.

Speaking to The Hindu founder president of the NCPNR S.R. Hiremath said that the ICFRE had crossed its brief by recommending mining in Western Ghats, one of the 18 hot biodiversity spots in the world. Similarly, there was no rationale in cutting down the production of ore by 40 per cent.

The EIA that recommended reduction in production of iron ore to 25 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) from its peak of 41.5 million tonnes argued that this quantity along with augmented supplies from other districts would be sufficient to meet the needs of Karnataka, which is pegged by officials at 30 million tonnes.

However, Chairman, study team, NCPNR, Vishnu Kamath was of the opinion that 25 million tonnes was too high a figure after the colossal environmental degradation in the district.
