The animals which used to operate the carts are no longer there.<br /><br />Nearly half the village of 5,000 people sold has off its bullocks over the last few months, says sarpanch S M Balki. The drought and unseasonal rains had destroyed crops and drained finances, sharpening a long-running agrarian crisis. &quot;Sales peaked in March, when bank instalments have to be paid,&quot; says Balki.<br /><br />The state government's decision to extend the ban on cow slaughter to bullocks that very month, added to the crisis. Prices of livestock crashed since old bullocks that would have sold to abattoirs, found no takers. &quot;It's a question of demand and supply. Now that the old bullocks remain in the market, prices have almost halved,&quot; says Balki.<br /><br />Farmers here feel betrayed by the government. &quot;They were like 'bol bachchans' before the elections, even promising better prices. Now we are left to fend for ourselves,&quot; says local farmer Vijay Dhaman.<br /><br />Dahegaon is located in the cotton belt of Vidarbha, the epicentre of farmers' suicides in the country. Part of Yavatmal district, it once had a decent cotton crop. Now it is a vulnerable spot on the suicide map.<br /><br />&quot;The distress sale of cattle began a few years ago as the agrarian crisis grew. Now the sales are intensifying across the region,&quot; says farm activist Vijay Jawandhia.<br /><br />Ambadas Gaunekar ended up selling a pair of bullocks he had bought at Rs 60,000 for just Rs 40,000 in March. With barely any crop for two successive seasons, he had run up debts worth Rs 1.5 lakhs. &quot;The dalal came to our village and picked up my bulls in a matador. We didn't even make it to the cattle market,&quot; he says.<br /><br />By now, trade has come to a virtual standstill at most cattle markets. The prices are too low for those wanting to sell. Potential buyers don't want to take livestock which they cannot resell.<br /><br /><em>Farmers hiring bullocks<br /></em><br />So how will Dahegaon's farmers till their fields in June, the next sowing season? &quot;We will have to hire bullocks. It comes to about Rs 800 a day and up to Rs 12,000 for a three month season,&quot; says Arun Tatki who sold his pair for as little as Rs 30,000.<br /><br />Owning their own pair, however, allowed farmers a year-round supply of fertilizer in the form of cow-dung.<br /><br />Also, for any farmer, bullocks are a form of financial security. This is why farmers are dismissive of the state's plans to set up cattle shelters. &quot;I spent Rs 60,000 buying the bullocks. Should I give them away free to a cattle-shelter? I need to recover some of my money,&quot; says Gaunekar.<br /><br />By evening, the cows and bulls that remain in the village are let loose to forage for fodder. Farmers can no longer afford to feed them. 'We let them go to the nearby fields and forest. They return a day or two later. We cannot look after them,&quot; says Balki.<br /><br />When the pola festival comes in August, Dahegaon may have very few bulls left. Pola is a major festival in Maharashtra, where farmers adorn their bullocks with ornaments and worship them. &quot;This year, we will have to perform the pola puja with hired bulls,&quot; says Gaunekar.</div>

                            <div align="justify">-The Times of India<br /><br /><em>YAVATMAL: </em>The first thing that strikes you about Dahegaon village is its run-down and abandoned bullock-carts. They can be found lying outside most huts, with their paint peeling off, almost frozen in time. The animals which used to operate the carts are no longer there.<br /><br />Nearly half the village of 5,000 people sold has off its bullocks over the last few months, says sarpanch S M Balki. The drought and unseasonal rains had destroyed crops and drained finances, sharpening a long-running agrarian crisis. &quot;Sales peaked in March, when bank instalments have to be paid,&quot; says Balki.<br /><br />The state government's decision to extend the ban on cow slaughter to bullocks that very month, added to the crisis. Prices of livestock crashed since old bullocks that would have sold to abattoirs, found no takers. &quot;It's a question of demand and supply. Now that the old bullocks remain in the market, prices have almost halved,&quot; says Balki.<br /><br />Farmers here feel betrayed by the government. &quot;They were like 'bol bachchans' before the elections, even promising better prices. Now we are left to fend for ourselves,&quot; says local farmer Vijay Dhaman.<br /><br />Dahegaon is located in the cotton belt of Vidarbha, the epicentre of farmers' suicides in the country. Part of Yavatmal district, it once had a decent cotton crop. Now it is a vulnerable spot on the suicide map.<br /><br />&quot;The distress sale of cattle began a few years ago as the agrarian crisis grew. Now the sales are intensifying across the region,&quot; says farm activist Vijay Jawandhia.<br /><br />Ambadas Gaunekar ended up selling a pair of bullocks he had bought at Rs 60,000 for just Rs 40,000 in March. With barely any crop for two successive seasons, he had run up debts worth Rs 1.5 lakhs. &quot;The dalal came to our village and picked up my bulls in a matador. We didn't even make it to the cattle market,&quot; he says.<br /><br />By now, trade has come to a virtual standstill at most cattle markets. The prices are too low for those wanting to sell. Potential buyers don't want to take livestock which they cannot resell.<br /><br /><em>Farmers hiring bullocks<br /></em><br />So how will Dahegaon's farmers till their fields in June, the next sowing season? &quot;We will have to hire bullocks. It comes to about Rs 800 a day and up to Rs 12,000 for a three month season,&quot; says Arun Tatki who sold his pair for as little as Rs 30,000.<br /><br />Owning their own pair, however, allowed farmers a year-round supply of fertilizer in the form of cow-dung.<br /><br />Also, for any farmer, bullocks are a form of financial security. This is why farmers are dismissive of the state's plans to set up cattle shelters. &quot;I spent Rs 60,000 buying the bullocks. Should I give them away free to a cattle-shelter? I need to recover some of my money,&quot; says Gaunekar.<br /><br />By evening, the cows and bulls that remain in the village are let loose to forage for fodder. Farmers can no longer afford to feed them. 'We let them go to the nearby fields and forest. They return a day or two later. We cannot look after them,&quot; says Balki.<br /><br />When the pola festival comes in August, Dahegaon may have very few bulls left. Pola is a major festival in Maharashtra, where farmers adorn their bullocks with ornaments and worship them. &quot;This year, we will have to perform the pola puja with hired bulls,&quot; says Gaunekar.</div>

                            <div align="justify">-The Times of India<br /><br /><em>YAVATMAL: </em>The first thing that strikes you about Dahegaon village is its run-down and abandoned bullock-carts. They can be found lying outside most huts, with their paint peeling off, almost frozen in time. The animals which used to operate the carts are no longer there.<br /><br />Nearly half the village of 5,000 people sold has off its bullocks over the last few months, says sarpanch S M Balki. The drought and unseasonal rains had destroyed crops and drained finances, sharpening a long-running agrarian crisis. &quot;Sales peaked in March, when bank instalments have to be paid,&quot; says Balki.<br /><br />The state government's decision to extend the ban on cow slaughter to bullocks that very month, added to the crisis. Prices of livestock crashed since old bullocks that would have sold to abattoirs, found no takers. &quot;It's a question of demand and supply. Now that the old bullocks remain in the market, prices have almost halved,&quot; says Balki.<br /><br />Farmers here feel betrayed by the government. &quot;They were like 'bol bachchans' before the elections, even promising better prices. Now we are left to fend for ourselves,&quot; says local farmer Vijay Dhaman.<br /><br />Dahegaon is located in the cotton belt of Vidarbha, the epicentre of farmers' suicides in the country. Part of Yavatmal district, it once had a decent cotton crop. Now it is a vulnerable spot on the suicide map.<br /><br />&quot;The distress sale of cattle began a few years ago as the agrarian crisis grew. Now the sales are intensifying across the region,&quot; says farm activist Vijay Jawandhia.<br /><br />Ambadas Gaunekar ended up selling a pair of bullocks he had bought at Rs 60,000 for just Rs 40,000 in March. With barely any crop for two successive seasons, he had run up debts worth Rs 1.5 lakhs. &quot;The dalal came to our village and picked up my bulls in a matador. We didn't even make it to the cattle market,&quot; he says.<br /><br />By now, trade has come to a virtual standstill at most cattle markets. The prices are too low for those wanting to sell. Potential buyers don't want to take livestock which they cannot resell.<br /><br /><em>Farmers hiring bullocks<br /></em><br />So how will Dahegaon's farmers till their fields in June, the next sowing season? &quot;We will have to hire bullocks. It comes to about Rs 800 a day and up to Rs 12,000 for a three month season,&quot; says Arun Tatki who sold his pair for as little as Rs 30,000.<br /><br />Owning their own pair, however, allowed farmers a year-round supply of fertilizer in the form of cow-dung.<br /><br />Also, for any farmer, bullocks are a form of financial security. This is why farmers are dismissive of the state's plans to set up cattle shelters. &quot;I spent Rs 60,000 buying the bullocks. Should I give them away free to a cattle-shelter? I need to recover some of my money,&quot; says Gaunekar.<br /><br />By evening, the cows and bulls that remain in the village are let loose to forage for fodder. Farmers can no longer afford to feed them. 'We let them go to the nearby fields and forest. They return a day or two later. We cannot look after them,&quot; says Balki.<br /><br />When the pola festival comes in August, Dahegaon may have very few bulls left. Pola is a major festival in Maharashtra, where farmers adorn their bullocks with ornaments and worship them. &quot;This year, we will have to perform the pola puja with hired bulls,&quot; says Gaunekar.</div>

Drought, beef ban force distress sale of cattle in villages -Priyanka Kakodkar

-The Times of India YAVATMAL: The first thing that strikes you about Dahegaon village is its run-down and abandoned bullock-carts. They can be found lying outside most huts, with their paint peeling off, almost frozen in time. The animals which used to operate the carts are no longer there. Nearly half the village of 5,000 people sold has off its bullocks over the last few months, says sarpanch S M Balki. The drought and unseasonal rains had destroyed crops and drained finances, sharpening a long-running agrarian crisis. "Sales peaked in March, when bank instalments have to be paid," says Balki. The state government's decision to extend the ban on cow slaughter to bullocks that very month, added to the crisis. Prices of livestock crashed since old bullocks that would have sold to abattoirs, found no takers. "It's a question of demand and supply. Now that the old bullocks remain in the market, prices have almost halved," says Balki. Farmers here feel betrayed by the government. "They were like 'bol bachchans' before the elections, even promising better prices. Now we are left to fend for ourselves," says local farmer Vijay Dhaman. Dahegaon is located in the cotton belt of Vidarbha, the epicentre of farmers' suicides in the country. Part of Yavatmal district, it once had a decent cotton crop. Now it is a vulnerable spot on the suicide map. "The distress sale of cattle began a few years ago as the agrarian crisis grew. Now the sales are intensifying across the region," says farm activist Vijay Jawandhia. Ambadas Gaunekar ended up selling a pair of bullocks he had bought at Rs 60,000 for just Rs 40,000 in March. With barely any crop for two successive seasons, he had run up debts worth Rs 1.5 lakhs. "The dalal came to our village and picked up my bulls in a matador. We didn't even make it to the cattle market," he says. By now, trade has come to a virtual standstill at most cattle markets. The prices are too low for those wanting to sell. Potential buyers don't want to take livestock which they cannot resell. Farmers hiring bullocks So how will Dahegaon's farmers till their fields in June, the next sowing season? "We will have to hire bullocks. It comes to about Rs 800 a day and up to Rs 12,000 for a three month season," says Arun Tatki who sold his pair for as little as Rs 30,000. Owning their own pair, however, allowed farmers a year-round supply of fertilizer in the form of cow-dung. Also, for any farmer, bullocks are a form of financial security. This is why farmers are dismissive of the state's plans to set up cattle shelters. "I spent Rs 60,000 buying the bullocks. Should I give them away free to a cattle-shelter? I need to recover some of my money," says Gaunekar. By evening, the cows and bulls that remain in the village are let loose to forage for fodder. Farmers can no longer afford to feed them. 'We let them go to the nearby fields and forest. They return a day or two later. We cannot look after them," says Balki. When the pola festival comes in August, Dahegaon may have very few bulls left. Pola is a major festival in Maharashtra, where farmers adorn their bullocks with ornaments and worship them. "This year, we will have to perform the pola puja with hired bulls," says Gaunekar.
