Members quite satisfied with Chief Minister's stand on the issue

Sticking to the position that nothing short of closure of the Nuclear Power Plants in Kudankulam would satisfy them, members of the People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) on Monday announced a series of protests in January to highlight their demand.

Talking to reporters, S.P. Udayakumar, Co-ordinator of the PMANE, said on January 14, the day of Bhogi, villagers in Kudankulam and neighbouring areas would replace tungsten bulbs with Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL). Before that on January 12, PMANE will hold a rally from Idinthakarai, the venue of the protest, to Radhapuram.

On January 30, the day of Mahatma Gandhi's assassination, a novel protest of “wailing” to submit their complaints to the father of the nation will held.

Denying the suggestion that the PMANE had been caught in the political tussle between Tamil Nadu government and the Centre, Mr. Udayakumar also said there was no reason to think that the support from Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for his movement had reduced in the last few months.

“Going by her last statement that is made after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's announcement about Nuclear Plants during his visit to Russia, we are quite satisfied with her stand. She understands our problem and we trust her,” he added.

Mr. Udayakumar said the three women Chief Ministers—Ms. Jayalalithaa, Mamta Banerjee and Mayawati—proved that they understood people's problem than any other politician and wanted them to raise the Kudankulam issue in the Chief Ministers' conference next month.

To a question why PMANE raised a series of issues with the government while its consistent stand had been closure of the Nuclear Power Plants, he said, “this was to convey the message that we are not impractical playboys, but very serious people keen on exposing the dangers behind nuclear plants.”

“If we have not raised 49 questions that world would not have known the dangers,” he said reiterating that they were yet to receive proper reply on many issues. Making it clear that PMANE was not a political outfit, he said it joined issue with the Congress since the ruling party +had made Kudankulam project a prestige issue.
