According to the Global Corruption Barometer 2013 prepared by Transparency International, http://www.transparency.org/gcb2013/report

•    54 percent of respondents from India reported having paid a bribe in the last 12 months to one out of eight services-police, judiciary, registry, land, medical, education, tax and utilities.

•    40 percent of respondents from India felt that over the past 2 years the level of corruption has increased a lot.

•    On a score scale of 1-5 (where 1 means not at all corrupt, 5 means extremely corrupt), Indian respondents perceived political parties (4.4 out of 5) as the most corrupt followed by the police (4.1 out of 5). Military (2.5 out of 5) was perceived as the least corrupt followed by NGOs (2.9 out of 5) and media (3.2 out of 5).

•    86 percent of respondents in India felt that political parties were corrupt/extremely corrupt. 75 percent of Indian respondents felt that police were corrupt/extremely corrupt. However, only 20 percent of respondents felt that military was corrupt/extremely corrupt.

•    62 percent of respondents from India reported that they or someone from their household had paid a bribe to the police, 61 to 'registry and permit services' and 58 per cent to 'land services'.

•    30 percent respondents from India agree and 26 percent disagree that ordinary people can make a difference in the fight against corruption. 

•    99 percent of respondents from India showed their willingness to get involved in any 1 of the 5 anti-corruption activities i.e. sign a petition, join a protest, join an organisation, pay more and use of social media.

•    Globally, more than one in four people (27 percent) report having paid a bribe in the last 12 months when interacting with key public institutions and services. 

•    Among the eight services evaluated, the police and the judiciary are seen as the two most bribery prone by citizens globally. An estimated 31 percent people who came into contact with the police report having paid a bribe.
